Growing MC Success & An Essential Music Album

Song Upfront

Example- Last Ones Standing
Pop, Dance, Rap

The fourth single from Example’s debut album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ is another pop song by the name of ‘Last Ones Standing’. Hoping to continue the astounding success of his three previous top 20 hits, this single will no doubt make a noticeable impression in the charts with the video already amassing a total of over 60,000 views on YouTube. The video director has decided not to go down the expected route of a night out drinking in town, but has chosen an imaginative 70’s cop show theme where Example sports large sideburns and wears comical police outfits. Standing out on the music channels, the video entails an eventful police chase where Example jumps and flips amusingly across walls, pursuing to catch a gang of criminals who are selling pirated copies of his album. Born from the producing assistance of Indie-rock Swedish act Peter, Bjorn And John, multiple clashing sounds and a pumping beat open up this song about enjoying ‘a night out with your mates and getting really messy’. Example’s narrative lyrics portray a couple acting out devious Bonnie and Clyde inspired behaviour whilst ‘out to paint the town red’. With the commercial appeal to be played on a variety of radio stations and this humorous accompanying video to boot, you are sure to hear this song many times as we countdown to its release date. ‘Last Ones Standing’ is due for release through Ministry of Sound recordings 12th September, whilst Example’s debut album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ is out now.

Catch Example performing live this weekend at V Festival! He will be showcasing ‘Last Ones Standing’ and other hits live at The Arena of Weston Park Saturday afternoon and Hylands Park on Sunday.

Christina Aguilera- You Lost Me
Pop

In one word, this vocal performance can be classed as stunning. Christina has always had the best songwriters on hand to perfect striking, heartfelt lyrics which is none more so demonstrated by this standout track from new album Bionic. Taking credit for the song’s writing duties are Christina herself with the help of solo artist Sia and one of her biggest song writing collaborators Samuel Dixon. Also finely produced by Dixon, the song begins peacefully with gentle piano keys as Christina weeps into the microphone, ‘the love is gone’. Great anticipation is built for the three minutes thirty seconds of blissful hearing pleasure that follows. Christina’s trademark vocal acrobatics float through the bridge of the song with sombre violins creeping in as it is revealed the woman’s partner in question has been unfaithful. First run through of the chorus is sung with angelic notes from the top end of her vocal register juxtaposed to the force by which she sings it at the other end of the track. It is rare for an artist to be able to pour their heart out on a track about sensitive subjects as well as this and it is this connection to the deepest emotions of her dedicated fan base that she does perfectly well. As the song breaks down the violins pick up and she cries ‘You’ll regret it but it’s too late’ crafting a poignant yet dramatic masterpiece. At its climax the song’s overwhelmingly powerful melody ignites Christina’s erupting vocals in the final chorus, hitting your senses into an alarming whirl wind. The final breathes bring the song full circle with a sad but calm reiteration of the song title, ‘Babe, you lost me’. This is yet another storming ballad to go alongside such previous hits ‘Beautiful’ and ‘The Voice Within’ and will no doubt enthral those lucky enough to witness its recital live. ‘You Lost Me’ is hoping to top previous single ‘Not Myself Tonight’’s disappointing number 12 position and is expected to get a UK release in September.

Christina nailed her first live performance of the song 26th May on the American Idol finale and you can see it here.

Lissie
Folk/Indie/Rock

The American folk/rock scene gets an energised revival in the form of Illinois’ Lissie. The 28 year-old with long blonde locks and freckled face has a raw striking voice fused with an American twang, setting her apart from anyone in the commercial radar of now, and for quite a while back in chart history for that matter. She has been constantly performing this year and managed to win over famous fans in the form of Courtney Love, Mumford & Sons, and Mark Ronson along the way. Her determination to showcase her music shines through by looking at a touring schedule that has included a number of UK festivals such as Glastonbury with Bestival, V Festival and several others still to come. November 2009 saw her first release in the form of five-track EP ‘Why You Runnin’’, which showcased one of her best written tracks ‘Everywhere I Go’. The song which has been used on several TV programmes including Grey’s Anatomy has moving vocals and a solemn accompanying guitar that tugs at the heartstrings of listeners. ‘Angels will call on me and take me to my home’ she cries in a track that will sadden yet astound listeners into wondering how the singer is able to evoke our emotions so strongly. Earlier this year Lissie performed a storming rendition of the song with the help of Ellie Goulding for a live duet. Debut album ‘Catching A Tiger’ followed at the start of July with critical acclaim in the press, landing near the top 20 of the album chart at number 22. Many tracks on the album are uplifting mid-tempo affairs such as third single ‘Cuckoo’. This musical approach is reminiscent of popular folk/rock from the 70s and ideal for driving with the top down during summer taking your mind away to long winding American highways. Regrettably past singles ‘In Sleep’, concluded by a guitar solo that begs for increased volume, and ‘When I’m Alone’, rhythmically pulsed with a sing along chorus, failed to enter the top 40 despite rotation on Radio 2. However, Lissie’s talent doesn’t necessarily need confirmation by single success as she is truly an album artist whose unique vocals will be loved by a niche crowd of followers. Lisse will be heading out to support The Script on their UK tour this September before embarking on her own at the end of October. Single ‘Cuckoo’ is set for release 30th August and you can watch the accompanying video below.

Lissie has caught attention of new fans with her cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ which can be heard here and will feature on the release of 'Cuckoo'.

  • Marina And The Diamonds' (NMU 16/5/09) biggest record label push comes in the form of single 'Hollywood'. Watch the eye-grabbing video and listen out for the brilliant lyric starting 'Oh-My-God...'. She has also featured heavily in the majority of top music tips for 2010 lists.
  • Last NMU featured artist Plan B (NMU 29/11/09) did well to hit the top 10 with 'Stay Too Long'. Peaking at number 9, it is his most successful single to date. He has announced that follow up single will be called 'She Said', out 22nd March 2010.
  • A big disspointment was had by The Temper Trap (NMU 27/8/09) boys. Follow up single 'Fader' failed to reach the top 40 at a disspointing 76 in the first week of 2010 music sales. Could this be a sudden end to their singles career before it even had the chance to bloom?
  • Ke$ha (NMU 29/11/09) has gone from strength to strength since first single 'TiK ToK' was released. It reached number 1 in five countries and set the female weekly download and total weekly top 40 mainstream airplay records in the US. Album 'Animal' is out in the UK 1st February 2010.

Tinie Tempah- Pass Out
www.myspace.com/tinietempah
Hip Hop, Electro, Grime

UK rap has found its new calling in Tinie Tempah. Blasting out of South London with the lyrical skills to match those of the 2009 UK rap successes (Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder, N-Dubz), he adds a different spin to what has recently been a very pop centred scene. He has been tipped as one of MTV's '10 of 2010' and it doesn't come without reason. Aspiring for the popularity of his inspirational role model Dizzee Rascal, the underground grime scene was also where Tempah begun his career at the tender age of 16. Though his music may not appeal to a demographic as wide as Dizzee's latest efforts, Tempah differentiates himself with moody beats and addictive rhythms. Outstanding hooks are the key to his music. The rapper has managed to develop his talent and discovered the commercial appeal to produce 'Pass Out'. Numerous Radio 1 DJ's have been all over this track like bees to honey naming it 'Single Of The Week' and it has solidified itself whithin the station's B List. This track has the makings of guarenteeing his cross-over into the mainstream with a bang. 'Pass Out' is revelled with dark dubstep synths and begins with a tinny drum chatter leading to 'It's OK, I'm good'. This signals the start of the unforgettable song as the heavy bass of the beat kicks in. Bragging about his rapping high life propects, Tempah's London rapping accent has a rolling flow you can't help remember making the lyrics sound seamless. Finishing on a mighty high, the track transforms into a drum and bass rave, which will no doubt light up the clubs. 'Pass Out' is scheduled for release 1st March 2010. Eliza Doolitte

The quirkyness of young Eliza Doolittle's music will sashay its way into your mind throughout 2010. Currently grabbing interest on the live circuit, it was back in November when her first fans lent their ears to Eliza's Stevie Wonder and Minnie Ripperton influenced tunes. Her first EP 'Rollerblades' was released with the title track, her most trademark song to date, which is a ditty she sings about moving on with thoughts of 'knowing what you want before you say it'. Eliza best describes her music as 'mix of soul-felt pop in the old skool sense, with a little fruit, spice, sugar and nuts.' and this sense of creativity is reflected greatly in her innocent music with colourful style. Her cutesy and feminine attitude is refreshing much like Lily Allen and Kate Nash once were as she simularly chooses day-to-day experiences as the object of her songwriting inspiration. She also has her individual dress sense of short dresses and Nike trainers down to a tee as she prances round in the video to lead single 'Skinny Genes'. Easily a definition of sun bleached pop with it's steel drum rhythm and piano tinkling, the single is a song about displaying her flirty affections towards her boyfriend. Most noticeable here is a satisfying whistle in the chorus that combines with the song's bouncy melody with the power to magically perk up a miserable February. Confirmation of the release date for 'Skinny Genes' is to be announced soon and her as yet untitled album is to be released this Spring. Watch the official video to Skinny Genes' here:

Plan B- Stay Too Long
www.myspace.com/time4planb
Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, Soul

Chase & Status' collaborator of choice has smartened up and turned to 60's pop rhythms for his return single. After helping the drum & bass duo achieve their highest chart entry ever with the top 10 hit 'End Credits', this exposure will do him favours as he sets out to promote his solo career once more. There was a lot of hype about this edgy London rapper back in 2006 when his debut album 'Who Needs Actions When You've Got Words' was released, which unfortunately fell flat of the mainstream probably due to his attention to controversial lyrics on modern day life. Now unrecognisable from his past, this return puts him a completely different light with 'Stay Too Long' creating joy and excitement. The song kicks in with a choppy guitar riff and Ben Drew's squaking vocals are parted by a sudden drum roll as you loose yourself in a head-bobbing beat. Plan B has been quoted as saying the single is taken from a concept album based on a Motown singer being sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Clapping tambourines, an organ piano and a soulful gospel choir on backing vocals in the chorus help lift the song to its enjoyable highs. Ofcourse it wouldn't be a Plan B song without a rap where his expressive London accent coarsens an early breakdown, showing his belting pasion as his earlier work once did. In the climax of the song energy is pumped to the max as his voice punches out the lyrics . The release date for 'Stay Too Long' is 11th January 2010 and you can see the official director's cut video here:

Pop, Electro, Dance

Here is an exciting new personality entering the pop world. 22 year old Kesha Rose Sebert from Los Angeles sings on tracks sprinkled with the same addictive dance magic as Lady Gaga and in her own words hopes to 'represent irreverance'. Irreverance is just the vibe she gives off as she sexily struts her stuff in the video to debut single 'TiK ToK'. Her image is that of a materialistic American style along the same lines of Katy Perry and 3OH!3 where partying is all the rage. Proving she's not one to have shyed away from the lime light in her past, flirting with fame started before she had even released a record with a feature in Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' video. This eccentric character is also keen to tell the media about the time she broke into Prince's house with the spontaneous optimisim of working with him, and another moment when she accidentally vomited in Paris Hilton's closet . When it came to working on her record, which didn't get any of the Prince production that she was hoping for, the sharing of super producer Dr. Luke with rap superstar of the moment Flo Rida meant her vocals found their way onto early 2009 single 'Right Round'. Now having released 'TiK ToK', Ke$ha has started her worldwide chart domination with the single reaching top 10 in all of the top music markets including achievements of number 5 in USA and platinum status in New Zealand. You can download 'TiK ToK' now, whilst 'Animal' is the name of her debut album due for release 5th January 2010. With up tempo tracks covering genres of pop, electro, dance and hip hop this debut album from the vivacious Ke$ha is sure to fire into the top 10 of the album charts early next year.

  • 'Ghosts 'N' Stuff' is the title of Deadmau5's (NMU 16/5/09) next single with Rob Swire from Pendulum on vocals. Currently on Radio1's B List, it's due for release 28/9/09. the song will be a track on Deadmau5's forthcoming new album 'For Lack Of Better Name', released the previous week (21/9/09).
  • A monster rap collaboration has been made on Kid Cudi's (NMU 31/10/08) next track 'Make Her Say'. Not only does it contain a 'Poker Face' hook sung by Lady Gaga but Common and Kanyé West have also lent their rapping talent to the track.
  • A catfight for number 1 is almost upon us in the singles chart as Pixie Lott's second single 'Boys & Girls' goes head to head with The Sugababes' 'Get Sexy'. The Sugababes look set for number 1 with their release 31/8/09, whilst Pixie Lott is hot on their heels releasing her single the week after (7/9/09).

V Festival Roundup

The sun shone on Hylands Park, Chelmsford for the 14th annual V Festival last weekend (22nd-23rd August) to create a heated star studded weekend. Aussie dance sensations Pendulum were easily one of the most popular acts of the weekend, creating a storming set to an energetic crowd Saturday night. Moshpits were pocketed across the crowd whilst others raved with glowsticks in hand to the sounds of hits 'Blood Sugar', 'Turantula' and their insane remix of The Prodigy song 'Voodoo People'. Hysteria levels could not be beaten by Lady Gaga however, who filled out The Arena tent on Sunday night with a screaming, jumping crowd. She power vocalled her number one's 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' and danced all over the stage so much so that she broke a heel. Headliners of Saturday evening The Killers played many album tracks the revellers hadn't heard before, but an encore of 'All These Things That I've Done' and 'When You Were Young' had the whole crowd clapping their hands and singing along at the V Stage. Dissapointment of the weekend came from Oasis who could have walked all over The Killers' headline slot the next day had they not cancelled due to Liam Gallaghers 'laryngitus'. Fans had to make do with Snow Patrol, MGMT or Keane Sunday night who all played Oasis covers in their absence. Other highlights of the weekend included Dizzee Rascal's crowd pleasing 'Bonkers', Katy Perry's crowd dive, and a healthier looking Amy Winehouse joining The Specials on stage during their set.

Chart Update (as of 23/8/09)

David Guetta added another number 1 to his collection this week in the singles chart with 'Sexy Chic', this time with Akon on hand for vocal duties. Also hitting the top 10 is new Justin Timberlake signing Esmee Denters at number 7 with 'Outta Here'. Elsewhere, Just Jack makes a re-entry to the chart at 11 with mellow pop song 'The Day I Died' proving his popularity has returned somewhat. The highest riser moving up fourteen places to 23 is Lily Allen's '22', proving her popularity is still strong. 'So Fine' by Sean Paul is the only other new entry at number 25.

There was a battle between Calvin Harris and Tinchy Stryder (NMU 23/12/08) for number 1 in the album chart this week. Harris prevailed by budging Michael Jackson off the top spot for the first time in a while and Stryder settled for number 2. After 40 weeks, Beyoncé's 'I Am Sasha Fierce' is still going strong at number 3, whilst new band Vagabond's 'You Don't Know The Half Of It' makes its debut week in at 27. Little Boots' 'Hands' is the highest riser this week, moving nine places up from 34 to 25.

Tinchy Stryder- You’re Not Alone

www.myspace.com/tinchystryder

Rap, Dance, Pop

Possibly one of the best samples of the year comes from 22 year old Tinchy Stryder (NMU 23/12/08), with his third single off his debut album 'Catch 22', 'You're Not Alone'. The chorus features an Olive sample from the original song under the same name, which was a standout mid 90's dance track. With the familiar hook and his popularity at its peak at the moment, this next single could easily be another number one for the East Londoner. Tinchy Stryder has built a reputation with his music by choosing the right synths to please everybodys ears, which also bodes very well in the clubs. He repeats the words 'keep holding on' in a song about convincing the one he loves that they should be together, ending with the sample's 'maybe it's time to be with me'. His rapping fills the gaps between the Olive lyrics with ease and when the synths breakdown for a few seconds he advances his chat up line verses over a melodic piano. Other than debut single 'Stryderman', the only negative behind Tinchy Stryder's releases is that he seems nerved to go it alone (no pun intended) considering two previous collaborations and now a sample. However, this isn't going to stop him releasing some of the most popular songs of the year. Calvin Harris may have won the fight for number 1 on the album front last Sunday, pipping Stryder to number 2, but this track could put him ahead to 3-1 on the singles front. Don't put it past him to release a fifth single if all goes to plan with 'You're Not Alone', he has plenty other songs to choose from his 18 track album. Although at number 50 in the singles chart on downloads already, a release date for 'You're Not Alone' is set 2nd November. An official video is yet to be released.

If you’ve heard any other new bands so far this year, The Temper Trap has the potential to knock them all out the water. This four piece pop/rock group from Melbourne, Australia create music that hits the soul. As the beginning guitar chords resonate on lead single 'Sweet Disposition', the last breeze of a brilliant summer gone by phases over you as August comes to a close. Fond memories of times we have laughed and soaked up the sun will flood by as lead singer Dougie Mandagi’s vocals call out as if from hill tops. 'Sweet Disposition' is recognisable from both the 4Music V Festival advert, a SkySports HD advert, and it has also been a ‘Single of the Week’ on iTunes. Most new bands really don’t get a set up as good as this. A metaphorically creative name has been chosen for this band who caught the attention of Arctic Monkey and Kasabian producer Jim Abiss. With Abiss taking up producing duties, The Temper Trap have created Coldplay-esque melodies with Mandagi's vocals complimenting the style as greatly as Chris Martin can. Tracks like 'Love Lost' and 'Fader' have a sound that empowers the air. A newly relaunched Infectious Records will be very pleased the album 'Conditions' is being praised by the critics, achieveing 3 stars from Q and an 8/10 from NME. 'Sweet Disposition' has been out to download since 27th July but is now climbing up the charts at number 35. See the official video below:

X Factor runners up
JLS get a second week at the top of the singles chart with 'Beat Again' as Mr Hudson's first solo single 'Supernova' featuring Kanye West fails to topple them. 'Supernova', shockingly one of only two new entries in the top 40 this week is at number 2, whilst Frankmusik's electro pop song 'Confusion Girl' makes 29. Michael Jackson fever is now fading away as 'Billie Jean' drops nine places to 37, the biggest fall this week. La Roux's first single 'In For The Kill' on the other hand is still popular as it rises six places to 17, the highest riser this week.

The number 1 and 2 position in the album chart stays the same this week as
Michael Jackson's 'The Essential' and Florence + The Machine's (NMU 31/10/08) 'Lungs' respectively. Number 11 is home to Jordin Sparks who is the highest new entry this week with her sophomore album 'Battlefield', followed by another Michael Jackson best of album 'The Collection' at 14. Highest risers are Noisettes' 'Wild Young Hearts' at 9 and Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown' at 20, both gaining seven places.

Bloc Party- One More Chance
www.myspace.com/blocparty
Indie, Dance, House

Bloc Party are a band never afraid to experiment and push the boundaries of indie music, never more so than with their next 'in between album single' 'One More Chance'. This time around the band are continuing with their attention grabbing indie/dance music in the wake of big chart hit 'Flux'. However, instead of trance type synths this single takes influence from early nineties house music with repetitive chyming piano chords. Proving the production duties of Jacknife Lee never cease to fail, this record blows previous Arman Van Helden collaboration remix single out of the water with an almighty smash. Imagine this song blasting out your car stereo as the sun sets after a hot Summer's day and you'll understand a great setting for such a tune. 'One More Chance' was actually recorded in April because there was 'still some creative energy left', lead singer Kele Okereke explains. Although Bloc Party haven't been a singles band in the past, this song has a club beat giving it potential to be as big as 'Flux''s number 8 chart position. The odd retro video includes a madman on keyboards, a tap dancer in a garage and an attempt to contact the dead with an ouija board.
'One More Chance' is released on 10th August.

No this isn't a childrens TV programme turned pop group out to scare you as the name may suggest, but an ultra cool indie male/female duo only the hippest kids are following (that includes Little Boots). Meeting outside a gig in not too distant 2007, Chris and Dexy Valentine became friends and started making music together over myspace including their first track 'Teenage Love'. The band produce songs that send you to a typical hot, sunny U.S. setting i.e. the never ending blue Long Beach coastline or a bustling Los Angeles street, whilst wearing your fashionable shades and short summer get-up of course. Heavily influenced by the 80's, the band create a hippy aura similar to that of MGMT with their steady beats, apathetic echoing vocals and demanding guitar riffs. Image-wise, artwork from the band draws in dreamy animal fantasy and space like scenes, which compliments their music perfectly. They have already toured with Black Kids and The Virgins and are now heading out across America this Autumn with another up and coming band School Of Seven Bells. A debut EP from the band was recently put up for downloading on UK iTunes featuring five hot tracks that can also be heard on their myspace. A scheduled album release date has not been stated in the press, but look at NMU News for when the information is out. The video for which was their first single (June 08) and arguably their most catchy song, 'Black Magic', can be seen below:

Chart Update:
(chart ending 13/6/09)

Black Eyed Peas' 'Boom Boom Pow' makes its second switch with Dizzee Rascal for the number 1 spot as Dizzee's 'Bonkers' goes back to number 2. The number 3 spot however is taken by the highest new entry- Kasabian with 'Fire'. Other action in the top 10 comes from the Keri Hilson ft. Kanye West & Neyo track 'Knock You Down' that moves up 6 places from 12 to 6. Empire Of The Sun's popularity is rising as 'We Are The People' is the highest mover this week, going up 12 places from 26 to 14.

In the fight of two young male soloists for number
1 this week Paolo Nutini celebrates his win with 'Sunny Side Up', an improvement of 2006's number 3 album 'These Streets'. Daniel Merriweather should be pleased with 'Love & War' though that reaches a place behind. 'Passione' by Paul Potts is the other new entry in the top 10 at 5. Empire Of The Sun also make the highest leap in the album chart, up 10 places from 29 to 19 with 'Walking On A Dream'.

This week I bring you...

Song Of The Week

Miike Snow- Animal

www.myspace.com/miikesnow
Pop, Alternative, Electronic

This week's song of the week comes from Swedish trio Miike Snow who have previously dabbled in more pop than you would have first believed. From producing new singer Daniel Merriweather's debut album 'Love & War' (released last week), to Christian Karlsson & Pontus Winnberg of the band sharing an Oscar for penning the Britney Spears track 'Toxic' under their duo alias Bloodshy & Avant. Producing for Kylie Minogue and Madonna are the other notable achievements of Bloodshy & Avant, proving this band has great creative potential. Named after the Japanese director Takeshi Miike, Andrew Wyatt is the third member to complete this indie/pop band. The song has a distinctive opening with the echoing chymes and horns that repeat through the song and to duplicate this effect are the wavering smokey vocals, intertwinned at times with the chattering of drums. This is a positive sounding song that is complemented by a 45 second piano section that joins in by continuing the pulsing melody accompanied by a delightful hum. Similar singwriting and happy-go-lucky vocals can be compared to that of Vampire Weekend for who they have remixed a song found on their myspace. Other songs found on their self titled debut album are similar pleasing, melacholic, electronic funk making for an enjoyable listen. Miike Snow's debut album was released last month on 12th May. 'Animal' was first released 17th February but with recent plays on Radio1 a re-release looks possible. (Special thanks goes to Musical Musings For The Masses for this suggestion).
An unofficial video for 'Animal' can be seen below:

New Artist
Mz. Bratt
www.myspace.com/brattonline
Hip/Hop, Grime, Electro

There has been a lot of breakthrough male MC's in the charts at the moment including Tinchy Stryder (NMU 23/12/08), Chipmunk and Ironik, but to prove there are female MC's out there just as good is East London's Mz Bratt. At only 17 this spirited rapper has more charisma and clever rhymes than a lot of artist's twice her age. Her biggest exposure to date was through T4 talent show 'Music-Cool' where she stood out as one of the most passionate and creative artists on the programme. One of her myspace tracks 'Future's Bright' has clocked up over a million listens and she is keen to remix the work of other fellow urban artists like Jazmine Sullivan (NMU 19/8/08) and Tinchy Stryder (NMU 23/12/08). Her debut single 'Who Do You Think You Are?' is a hip/hop, electro club track featuring a heavy synth bassline and a smacking beat. Bratt's sharp London accent can be noticed as she effortlessly turns over the lyrics on a song about refusing a guy's flirtatious advances. It's obvious major record lable Universal are playing safe with her first release by producing a record the masses will enjoy in the clubs, so it seems Mz Bratt's unique style will shine through on later releases. The song can be compared to a similar effort from Lisa Mafia who also made a feature on a club track 'Bad Girl (At Night)' last year. Mz Bratt's debut single 'Who Do You Think You Are?' is to be released 13th July.
